Martin 'Marty' Bruederl

Fandom: Original Series (The Band Project)

General Information

First name: Martin
Middle name(s): Phineas Daniel Alton
Surname: Bruederl
Age: 25
Date of birth: August 2nd
Race: White European
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Asexual, biromantic
Current residence: Cambridge, UK
Relationship status: Single
Social status: Upper class

Traits of Voice

Accent (if any): East English
Language spoken: English
Other languages known: Dutch
Style of speaking: Marty tends to speak purely as a  professional to the vast majority of people, rarely straying from the topic at hand and rarely wasting breath on anything he deems irrelevant. He doesn't do small talk or friendly chatter, and when he does lose his  professional tone, it's out of anger or frustration. When talking to Leah, Marty takes on  a gentler and friendlier tone, but often just ends up sounding tired more  than anything else.
Volume of voice: Mostly  medium-low, but can be loud when he has to be.

Physical Appearance

Height: 5'8
Weight: 117 lbs
Eye colour: Brown
Skin colour: White
Shape of face: -
Distinguishing features: His ears stick out a  bit.
Build of body: Scrawny
Hair colour: Auburn
Hair style: Short, combed or brushed flat and neat  when he has the energy, time and motivation, but otherwise left in whatever mess he'd made of it in his sleep or after running a hand through it in stress.
Posture: Straight, though he tends to hunch when sat down.
Tattoos: None
Piercings: None
Typical clothing: Plain tops, often layered under flannel shirts, and jeans. He wears glasses with thin, brown frames.
Is seen by others as: Harsh and stern, someone who doesn't suffer fools gladly and who certainly isn't here to make friends. Marty has been considered by some (Nevii) as incapable of human emotion, annoyingly precise and meticulous and ruled entirely by logic.

Personality

Likes: Cats, toads, observing animals in general, science, documentaries of various kinds, exploring  new places, sour sweets, cartoons
Dislikes: Mornings and early starts, chaos and disorganisation, anything too gory, especially strong-smelling foods, people fussing over him, being referred to as 'Martin'
Education: Has attended university.
Fears: Bees, abandonment
Personal goals: Marty has no real goals in his life. He's already fairly successful and has enough money to support himself, his 'sister' and his toads. He tends to go through life on autopilot, not really giving much thought to anything, and is unaware he has a mental illness until it becomes severe enough that he tries to take his own life. His main aspiration in life is to acquire more knowledge and support his friends in their goals.
General attitude: Marty is very anti-social and somewhat bristly. He tends to act like others are not worth his time. He has a somewhat numbed attitude and rarely shows any strong emotion. He has issues with trusting others or allowing himself to get close to people.
Religious values: Protestant
General intelligence: Marty is considered to be very intelligent. He is very academically minded.
General sociability: Low. He dislikes interacting with others.

Health

Illnesses (if any): Depression (high-functioning), undiagnosed
Allergies (if any): Feathers
Sleeping habits: Marty often stays up late working and doesn't get nearly  enough sleep. He has occasional bouts of insomnia.
Energy level: Low. Marty's manner is often somewhat robotic.
Eating habits: Marty is a chronic undereater and almost never eats in front of others. He has no issues with food in itself, but he is aware he isn't eating nearly enough and genuinely fears the judgement and fussing others will direct at him if they realise how little he eats. He already dislikes it when someone comes to check up on him when he's spent most of the day shut away with his work, even if it is the only thing that makes him stop and take a break.
Memory: Fairly good.
Any unhealthy habits: As a result of his depression, or perhaps as a coping strategy, Marty puts his work before self-care, to the point that he'll completely ignore his own needs if he feels anything needs to be done. He does not like to let himself relax and needs to keep his mind occupied, as he feels an occupied mind is a mind that can keep less pleasant thoughts at bay.

History

Birth country: England
Hometown: Norwich, England
Childhood: Marty was born to parents who were very cold towards him. When he started school, he was placed in the same infant school class as  Arnie du Jardin, and the two became firm friends throughout childhood. His family moved to Intwood when he was in Year 5, however, for the most part, he struggled to make friends there and tried (unsuccessfully) to stay in touch with Arnie. Despite struggling to make friends, he began dating at age 12.
Teen years: At age 14, Marty changed to a secondary school located closer to his home but that only accepted students aged 14 and up. This school specialised in maths and science. In his early teens, Marty conceived a child, and his daughter, Leah, was born the year he turned 15. His parents insisted Marty have nothing to do with the child, but he still became the legal father on the birth certificate. Shortly after the birth of his daughter, his girlfriend committed suicide. Marty's parents at  this point helped to ensure their family got custody of the child and tried to insist they all pretend Marty and Leah were siblings rather than father and daughter, threatening to remove Marty and Leah from the family if he did not comply. Marty withdrew socially, however few people at his current school had the chance to notice or the motivation to do something about it. Shortly after, his parents died, and their deaths were treated as suspicious. Marty and Leah were moved again, and he was forced to move schools once more. He began attending the same secondary as Arnold du Jardin and Neville Bowen, and was even in the same form class as both of them. By this point, Marty had already developed depression, however he did not realise it, and mostly just went through the motions of life automatically. He was not friendly towards anyone, even his own friends, and for the most part focused entirely on his education, often lashing out at anyone he perceived to be a time waster. Still afraid to break the rules his parents set despite their death and despite his foster carer knowing his true relation to Leah, he continued to pretend they were siblings and tell others around him they were siblings. His foster carer tried to get Marty to take proper parental responsibility while under her care. When the time came, he decided to study at Cambridge. His foster mother was supportive of this and kept looking after Leah until Marty was in a position where he could properly support and care for her himself.
Adult years: Marty studied computer science at university and at some point transferred over to management studies. He tended to devote his spare time to improving his performance at university. In his early 20's, he was contacted by Arnie, who told him about the formation of Ham Sushi, and requested Marty's involvement in various aspects, such as image design and song writing. Marty agreed to help and after some further study and paving of his career path, Marty worked as the band's manager. In his late 20's, Marty's depression suddenly becomes severe with no obvious trigger, and he makes an attempt on his life. After this, his friends accidentally discover the real relationship between Marty and Leah, and for a time, they insist the two stay with one of them.
Past places of residence: Intwood, Norfolk, England
History of family: His father is from a Dutch family. Other than that, the family history is unknown and unexplored.

Relationships

Parents: Before their death, Marty had a poor relationship with his parents. Their names were Sophie and Keo Bruederl. Arnie states that he believes Marty's parents saw him as  more of a  tool to make themselves look better than a son. They often made threats against him, including threats to kick him out if he didn't obey them, which is something that has stayed with him as a particular source of trauma. Even after their death, he was afraid to break their rules, including unreasonable rules designed to make them look better.
Siblings: N/A
Any enemies (and why): None known.
Children: He has a daughter, about 10 years old, however he tells her they are siblings, backing this up with the fact he is an orphan. Marty's friends are also all under the impression that Marty and Leah are siblings. When Marty is away, Leah stays with Arnie's parents or with Marty's friend, Lysander.
Friends: As well as the members of the band Ham Sushi, Marty considers some  of the other musicians and managers they've met on tour to be friends, and he has a  friend named Lysander who helps take care  of his toads whenever  he is unable to do so himself. Lysander himself is a fanatic keeper of a variety of amphibians and considers himself an expert on amphibian care. The two met at Cambridge University.
Best friend(s): Arnaud du Jardin. The two are childhood friends and have always been surprisingly close.
Important friends/relatives (explain): Potentially Arnie. When they met the second time (when Marty had become anti-social and unwilling to make friends), Arnie didn't let him push him away and insisted (in a manner bordering on harrassment) that the two become the best of friends again. He is also the main person to always check up on Marty to make sure he's attending to his needs. Potentially his foster carer following his parents' death, a woman named Olympia, as she tried to act as damage control of sorts and tried to get Marty comfortable with breaking his parents' more unreasonable rules and accept the truth for himself instead of living a lie, even if she was mostly unsuccessful.
Love interest (if there is one): Amanda Paterson (formerly), Leah's mother. Amanda committed suicide shortly after Leah's birth.

Combat

Peaceful or violent: Peaceful
Weapon (if applicable): N/A
Style of fighting: He doesn't really have one. He's never given any thought  on how  to defend himself against violent attacks either. He's never been attacked or assaulted, and for the time being doesn't believe he will be.
