Essentially, Shanahan has the majority of his body covered in tattoos that are usually hidden by his clothes. The tattoos listed I have picture examples of at the bottom of the post.

Typical clothing: Out of work, Shanahan generally wears jeans and shirts (usually long-sleeved) and smart jackets. His shirts usually sport some kind of geeky pop-culture reference. Shanahan is very much a geeky type. At work, he wears doctors scrubs, dark blue, and must wear short sleeves. His shoes are red and white.

History

Childhood: Shanahan grew up with a fairly standard childhood. He was an only child, and when he was nine, his mother left the home. At a young age, he showed a strong interest in medicine, which disappointed his father, who wished for Shanahan to carry on the family business (or rather his business), and who was somewhat disturbed by medical procedure and hospital everything. His father tried to discourage Shanahan's love of medicine.
Teen years: Shanahan's father remarried. Shanahan did not get on well with his step-mother. She decided his love of Gothic style and surgery were unhealthy. He began to argue with his parents about his life choices and especially invoked their wrath when he and a friend got a tattoo (Skull across the chest). He tended to get very stressed as he felt at school he was unable to achieve. His friends tended to laugh at his stressed side. Feeling unsupported in his home country and around those he'd grown up around, Shanahan decided to study abroad when he got to university age. Indeed, his friends and parents tended to insist the path he wished to follow would hold little for him.
Adult years: Shanahan was accepted into a medical school in the USA, where he studied with at least one of his future colleagues and friends. He began working at a hospital in Jump City. At some point he enters into a romantic relationship with a colleague of his. He has been subject to the violence on the streets and general danger of Jump City, and even gets brutally attacked first hand when he tries to shout down a monster or somesuch that enters the hospital to cause chaos. Later in life, he witnesses one of his friends going into cardiac arrest and diagnoses him with serious heart problems that I have forgotten the technical names for.
